Ловкость рук, Ваше Величество!

Sleight of hand, Your Majesty! Or it's German title Die gestohlene Schlacht.
Thanks to Andrey for this information. This is a comedy film from 1972 that was originally a GDR movie using the captured film props from the Nazi Frederick the Great movies. It's apparently terrible but have a look if you have a mind.

Captain of cavalry 1680

Thomas Lucy (1655–1684).
Artist:  Godfrey Kneller.
Year 1680

Thanks to Dimitry for finding this

My Facebook page Thirty years war reenactment is nearly at 1000 likes so I thought I'd promote it a bit. Its covering war between 1600 -1660 so that includes the 80 years war, English Civil war, and of course 30YW. I don't claim to be an expert on this era but there's enough interest for a non-Anglocentric English language site. Simply go on Facebook and search @pikeandshot.

Marston Moor 1969

Thanks to David Wilton SK for finding this chunk of nostalgia
A second Battle of Marston Moor - a re-enactment of the key battle of the Civil war over three hundred years ago, when the Royalists were routed. The 1969 battle was fought in intense heat and period costume - alas, with the same result. It was all part of the York Festival.

Pretenders 1972 review

I was so pleased that this got DVD release. I was 12 when it first came out and it sparked off a lifetime interest in the Monmouth Rebellion to the extent that I published my own book on the Rebellion The Days of King Monmouth. Hamilton Dyce is excellent as one of the baddies Percy Kirke and the whole series is peppered with eccentric characterizations and all manner of adults who were not nice. There is an element of juvenile horror about it with plague victims and hanging being prevalent. Great to hear them mention Frome. So if you like the Monmouth Rebellion and its lore then this is for you. I am going to stick my neck out and say that the narration style and look of this film was an influence to Kubrick's Barry Lyndon but you'll have to watch it to believe me

Johann Grimmelshausen Abenteuerlicher Simplizissimus - Teil 1

Wiki on the book
Simplizissimus is a German language novel set in the 30 Years War. Written at the time - well 1660s. Here is part 1 of a film version. Its in German but its still worth watching I think. Teil 2
English translation of the novel

A pikeman's arms and armour, and the equipment of a musketeer. From Principles of the art military by Henry Hexham (1642), Vol. 1.

Days of King Monmouth Ralph Mitchard

If you want to learn more about the Monmouth Rebellion then try my booklet

Some captures from the Pretenders (1972) DVD

Colonel Kirke - do not hiss the villain

The Duke of Monmouth

Kirke's Lambs
Got my copy of this and thought I'd share a few grabs from the credit sequence. I got my copy here post free - it's the cheapest I've seen it. I was 12 in 72 and I really enjoyed this had the novelization which was the 70s equivalent of owning the video.
Monmouth Rebels
I don't usually get excited by DVDs but this series from 1972 has bewitched me as a sort of missing piece of my childhood's jigsaw - why I have always been obsessed with the Monmouth Rebellion.

Battle of Pinkie Cleugh 1547 by Neil Mitchard

My brother lives in Musselburgh near Edinburgh and offered to take some photos for me of this 1547 battle being reenacted. The results are interesting - well done to all those who took part. Wiki on the battle.

The Royal Changeling fiction

I don't usually read fantasy but I read this one as it was given to me by the author at an event and now is available online for a few quid. It links Monmouth Rebellion lore with Arthurian and elfish themes creating a very readable fiction. Here
